In 1961, following her husband's election as President of the United States, Jackie Kennedy became the First Lady. S.T. Dupont lighters, prestigious items, were then a diplomatic gift of choice.
This was the gift chosen by André Malraux, then Minister of Cultural Affairs under General de Gaulle, who, in 1962, presented the First Lady with a gold Line 1 lighter adorned with a discreet golden "J". Deeply touched, she developed a strong attachment to this elegant object, both functional and intimate.
Nearly ten years later, S.T. Dupont received a special order: Jackie Onassis Kennedy wanted a ballpoint pen to match her lighter. The company did not manufacture writing instruments, but decided to take on the challengeA design icon
The first S.T. Dupont pen
The brass and the design of its Line 1 then inspired the S.T. Dupont craftsmen, who transposed the vertical metallic guilloche from the lighter's roller to the body of a pen.
Its body was then faceted; before being adorned with a vertical guilloche and launched on the market. Named "Le Classique", it marked the beginning of S.T. Dupont's Art of Writing and became, forever, an iconic design of the 70s.
